KW Malignant Pleural Effusion Clinic
Malignant Pleural Effusion (MPE) Program
The KW malignant pleural effusion program is run out of the Grand River Regional Cancer Center which is located at Grand River Hospital.
What are pleural effusions?
Pleural effusions are accumulations of fluid within the pleural space surrounding the lungs. Pleural effusions occur as a consequence of a large variety of lung diseases but also as a result of systemic illnesses and primary disorders of the pleural space itself. The seriousness of the condition depends on the primary cause of pleural effusion, whether breathing is affected, and whether it can be treated effectively.
The MPE clinic offers dyspnea management, support and counselling for patients with malignant pleural effusion. The MPE clinical team includes a Respirologist and a registered nurse.
